DFB New York has selected its next project partner, and will be raising funds for a desperately-needed water filtration plant in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. This city, often called “the cradle of short stops” is famous for producing major league baseball talent, but is plagued with poverty and water-related illnesses, which have a particularly devastating effect upon children.
Working with Esperanza International, we will cover the costs of equipment and installation for the water filtration system in the Barrio Blanco neighborhood, which will provide 3,000 gallons of water per day, serving 450 local households in one of the most impoverished areas of the country. In addition, the water filtration plant will create at least three jobs for local community members, who will manage the plant. The water will be sold to community members for 25% of actual market cost, and the revenue will enable the plant to become economically sustainable and an integral part of the community.
$10,000 is needed to complete this project, so please give what you can to bring clean water and opportunities to “the cradle of short stops.” Check the New York Chapter page for details on the upcoming fundraiser event in early 2012.
